While Peripatetics presented seemingly irrefutable proofs for prime materia, this concept has been vigorously contested, particularly by the Illuminationist school and subsequently by Mulla Sadra. This study systematically dissects the arguments supporting prime materia, focusing on the inherent inconsistencies within their underlying philosophical assumptions. The paper demonstrates the logical impossibility of the Peripatetic description of prime materia, highlighting the limitations of their metaphysical framework. While acknowledging the inherent difficulty of refuting the concept of potentiality, the analysis reveals substantial flaws in the Peripatetic account of prime matter. The rigorous extraction and evaluation of these foundational assumptions from the original arguments constitute a significant contribution, offering a refined understanding of the concept of matter within the Islamic philosophical tradition. This analysis also advances novel interpretations regarding fundamental concepts like the actuality-potentiality distinction and the nature of motion. چیستی ماده اولی و وجود آن اگرچه در نگاه مشائیان امری غیر قابل انکار بوده و براهینی نیز بر وجود آن اقامه کرده اند؛ لکن پس از شیخ اشراق این اندیشه به چالش کشیده شد و اشکالاتی به چنین وجودی وارد شد. صدرا نیز با نقد این ادله، وجود ماده اولی را به بیان دیگری ارائه کرد. این مقاله بر آن است تا به تحلیل استدلال‌های مورد استفاده در اثبات هیولای اولی با تمرکز بر نقد مبانی فکری صاحبان این ادله بپردازد. در این مقاله سعی شده تا نشان داده شود وجود ماده اولی با توصیفی که مشائیان بیان می دارند امکان تحقق ندارد. بررسی مبانی فلسفی ایشان مخاطب را به این نتیجه می رساند که علیرغم عدم امکان نفی قوه، اما نقدهایی جدی بر نظرات ایشان در خصوص ماده اولی وارد است. نکته قوت مقاله حاضر استخراج و ارزیابی دقیق این مبانی از دل استدلالهای ایشان است که توجه به آن می تواند موجب درکی عمیق‌تر نسبت به مفهوم ماده در فلسفه اسلامی شود. نیز در این میان به فراخور بحث در نقد برخی مبانی همچون حقیقت حرکت دیدگاه‌هایی نو ارائه شده است که درخور توجه است.
