abstract = {The concept of extension in natural sciences and the feature of extensity of physical objects is considered self evident and presumptive by Muslim theosophers. That a physical object has dimensions of width, length, and depth is recognized by almost all theosophers. However, they have followed different procedures in describing and explaining this fact. It is most likely that the only intellectual concept common among all classic and later philosophers is the very extensity of physical objects. The issue of extensity has not been taken into deep and precise consideration and investigation due to deeming itself evident and because of its frequent adoption and recognition by philosophers. Thus, this issue has been rarely studied according to the findings of modern science or any new approach.  As the article suggests, no new or different explanation has been given for the concept of dimension and extensity since the time of Ibn Sina. 
Benefitting directly from Ibn Sina’s discussions on extended body, the present article seeks to offer a roughly new account of the concept of extension. In addition, it tends to see this issue not belonging exclusively to the field of intellectual sciences, but as a part of modern science. Thus it takes the relation of extension to its analogous concepts in mathematics into account.

abstract_fa ={مفهوم امتداد در علوم طبیعى و ویژگى امتدادمندى اشیاى مادى نزد حکماى اسلامى مفروض و بدیهى انگاشته شده است. اینکه جسم مادى امرى عریض و طویل و عمیق است، تقریبا پذیرفته همه حکماست؛ هرچند در توصیف و تبیین آن شیوه هاى متفاوتى را به کار گرفته اند. شاید به جرئت بتوان گفت تنها مفهوم عقلى اى که مشترک بین همه حکماى متقدم و متأخر است، همین ویژگى امتدادمندى اشیاى طبیعى است. به علت بدیهى انگاشتن امتدادمندى و نیز تواتر و تکرار در پذیرش این مفهوم، به تبیین دقیق موضوع امتدادمندى چندان عنایت نشده و به ویژه این کمیت با نگاه جدیدتر و متأثر از یافته هاى ذیربط دانش جدید کمتر مورد فحص واقع شده است؛ به گونه اى که از زمان ابن سینا تاکنون، همان گونه که در این مقاله نشان داده مى شود، تبیین جدیدتر و متفاوتى از مفهوم بعد و امتدادمندى ارائه نشده است. در این مقاله، با بهره گیرى مستقیم از مباحث ابن سینا درباره جسم ممتد، کوشیده ایم که تقریرى نسبتا جدید از مفهوم امتداد عرضه کنیم. به علاوه بر آنیم تا موضوع امتداد را تنها متعلق به حوزه علوم عقلىِ محض نبینیم و آن را بخشى از موضوع دانش جدید نیز به شمار آوریم. از این رو به نسبتِ امتداد و مفاهیم همانند آن در ریاضى نیز توجه کرده ایم.
